Our History
Marriott Oliver has given spot on legal advice and help to the Shoalhaven for over 100 years.
Firm founders, Thomas Marriott and Herbert Lloyd Oliver, began our tradition of excellence.
Thomas Marriott became a solicitor in 1884 and after two years in Moruya he moved to Sydney to confirm his constitutional admission. On 30 August 1887, Thomas Marriott arrived in Nowra and secured his first case.
Thomas quickly became a leader in public activities. He was largely responsible for formation of the Nowra Volunteer Fire Brigade, led the Memorial Gate Committee as President for several years, and was elected Patron of the Returned Soldiers League.
In August 1937, Nowra Council created a public park on five acres directly opposite his home, and named “Marriott Park” in his honour. Today, this naturally beautiful recreation area is one of the most popular parks in the Shoalhaven.
"In public and private life, in church and professional life, Thomas Marriott has set an example of which Shoalhaven and his adopted land might well feel proud." Nowra Leader, November 1933.
Herbert Lloyd Oliver was admitted to practice on 28 August 1914. He joined Thomas as a partner in the firm. Together, they built a solid foundation for legal excellence and community service which continues.
